How it’s Made
Machine-embroidered towels are created by combining fabric (the towel itself) with decorative stitching done on an embroidery machine. The process is both technical and creative, and it usually follows these steps:
1. Design Selection
A digital embroidery design (flowers, monograms, logos, patterns, etc.) is chosen.
2. Stabilizing the Towel
Towels are soft and have a looped (terry) texture, which can shift or swallow stitches. To prevent this, stabilizer (a special fabric sheet) is placed under or inside the towel. Often, a water-soluble topper is also placed on top to keep stitches from sinking into the loops of the terry cloth.
3. Hooping
The towel, stabilizer, and topper are secured in an embroidery hoop. The hoop keeps the fabric taut and flat, so the stitches stay precise.
4. Machine Setup
The embroidery machine is threaded with the correct colors of polyester embroidery thread. and then the machine is programmed with the chosen design, which tells it exactly where and how to stitch.
5. Finishing
Once stitching is complete, the towel is removed from the hoop. All stabilizers are removed; threads are trimmed neatly from the front and back and the towel may be pressed lightly to smooth out any hoop marks. The final product is checked for clean stitches, even tension, and no puckering.
